  • WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM CERNUCCI’S SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING

In an age where the market is often dubbed “over saturated” it’s pushing brands to do more to stand out and gain favour among customers. Simultaneously, one move I’m seeing heavily is the push for a less “corporate / professional” look where brands don't take themselves too seriously leaving room for personality. One brand doing that well is Cernucci, which I think serves as a good reference for how brands can view and approach social media marketing, but why does it work so well? Here’s my observation It’s all chill One reason we're struggling to connect to a lot of these bigger corporate companies is that it's all too serious. Sometimes even out of touch where we as consumers struggle to relate. Over at Cernucci, it's all chill and laid back. It's funny and goes to show the brand's personality without trying too hard. Humour is one of the easiest ways to connect with others. People just want to have a good time. It’s Engaging The posts make you stop and read. It's a nice break from the pattern of same style posts you’ll see scrolling through Instagram, setting Cernucci apart from the competition, especially other jewellery brands forcing more of the high-end, lux lifestyle esque content. Chat screenshots always have a way of commanding attention, the science behind it really needs to be studied. Some of the situations are also relatable. People can see a post and connect with their similar experiences. Whether some of the chats are real or not, it encourages the community to react whether its via comments or their own DMs to the page. Shoutout to the Cernucci admins for the work. It’s familiar I think this of one of the key takes because Cernucci’s memes come in the same format of our favourite meme pages. It's not too new to the point it that it alienates you but its also a fresh style of content for a brand. They’ve struck the perfect balance. By keeping the brand voice synonymous, the format familiar and on the theme of common pop culture topics, it resonant with social media users who like meme culture. What do you think?

  • SAMPLES WE’RE STILL WAITING ON TO DROP

The amazing world of samples got the same type of lore as a much anticipated album. Something about a designer previewing pieces through stories, personal pages, or spam pages with little to no information while we have no idea of when it drops just draws us in with the mystique around the product. I've always got my eye on what brands are dropping (got a whole folder dedicated to it) so here are a few samples I've seen over time that I'm still yet to see drop. Which go the hardest? I might turn this into a series depending on how it's received. Just let me know.

  • THE DESIGNER WITHOUT ANY LIMITS

When I said that custom Timbs would take over, designers weren't playing and I think Mattias Gollin created some of the best ones if not THE best ones. It's only right I reached out to him and asked him a few questions. Who is Mattias Gollin? Hello, my name is Mattias Gollin and I am from Italy. I am a transversal designer. I have a strong focus on footwear having grown up in one of the main footwear districts in Italy, but my vision also extends to accessories and clothing. I have never set myself any limits. How did the Custom Timberlands happen, was it your idea or did they approach you? simply thought of pushing the limits of Timberland's inch boy design and liked to make its logo even more iconic by making a 3D printed structure, as well as raise it's perceived with pearls and crystals inspired by Pharrell, then Timberland approached me. How long does it take to create "The Timbs" I should probably give flowers to your patience. Of actual work for a single pair takes 3 days. I have a very efficient network of suppliers and collaborators, which allows me to do virtually everything very quickly. From the "the Timbs" to the MSCHF Brutal Boot, and Rat Boot, what inspired those and how did you come up with those ideas? Regarding the brutal boot the vision was quite clear from the beginning in my mind, I wanted to expand the sole design on the whole boot making it Brutal in the true sense of the word, as brutalism is in architecture. The mouse instead came out of brain storming with Lukas Bentel, creative director of MSCHF. If possible, please talk about the process of creating those? The process for creating these projects was similar, for example for "THE TIMBS," I scanned the 6 inch boot, developed a 3D shell that resembled the logo, 3D printed it, and meanwhile had the pearls and crystals inserted on the boots. It may seem very simple as a process, but there is actually a deep knowledge of the product behind it. Which is your favourite Custom Timbs? Mine, but there are many other designers who did a really good job, including @fioriino The collection of people who have worn your custom Timbs is crazy, but Draaaakee?? That's another level. How did that come together? He saw them and wanted them, friends close to him asked me for them. I appreciated the style of everyone who wore it as well as I will appreciate those who will wear it. Among them I particularly mention my friend @whoknowszay, who made a nice combo with the PELLE PELLE jackets. How did the Boot Rat with MSCHF idea happen? I had started with a three-dimensional graffiti of their logo since they are from Brooklyn and graffiti first became established in NEW YORK, then we tried to include distinctive features of my nationality, such as a piece of pizza wrapping around the boot, as well as for the Colosseum, and then came up with an ironic sketch from Lukas of a mouse under the sole, and he said that maybe it was too crazy of a concept, but I still decided to develop that idea after receiving green light from the whole team. It may all sound so crazy, but it's actually well in line with MSCHF's brand identity in that what they do is very much about artistic provocation and art itself. Talk about your previous project in Ral7000studio. When I was part of Ral7000Studio I have worked on many projects with as many brands such as Fear of God with Jerry and his team, as well as with Adidas Originals, the collaboration with BERSHKA and with many more on projects to be released over the next two ears that I cannot mention now. I have worked on individual products up to building brands from scratch, designing and developing footwear, clothing and accessories, following up where necessary the communication of them and setting the launch strategy. Today, a product is not an end in itself, but you have to curate and celebrate it at 360 degrees, from its conception to its distribution. But today I am no longer co-owner of Ral7000studio, it was a wonderful experience, but I felt inside that it was time to follow my own path. I see a lot of your Al work, obviously its a very controversial topic but what is your opinion on Al merging into the industry? I can say that I was one of the first to test AI in the fashion system, communicating it on social. I think a structural change in terms of technological development has just started like 30 years ago with the advent of the internet, it's cyclical. During these events, there is always something positive or negative to point out, but we should just embrace it by using it in the best way for all of humanity in all areas. I've seen a lot of different projects on your page, which is your favourite to date? I do not have a favorite project now, as all to date are part of my professional growth process as well as the ones I will do that will lead me to become who I am destined to be. However, the one that I have enjoyed the most so far has been the 2x4 boot "RAT"

  • THE JEANZ THAT MAKE YOU FLOAT

Loho has been teasing some new jeans recently thats being received very well already, so ahead of their drop tomorrow, lets talk about them! I believe this is one of the first pieces in this new direction you’re taken for your brand, with new iconography and branding. How do these jeanz fit into that new vision and why did they these get conceptualised? I’ll be real, I’m obsessed with denim, especially creating denim pieces that you and your friends can look fly as well as comfortable in. I wanted to make a piece that has an actual story by fusing West African symbols with London swag How are these Jeanz different to the others? I feel like we always gotta pave our own lane for everything we create, so jeanz is just my version of denim that me and my friends admire I see a whole new symbol on the jeanz, as well as a whole lot of panelling, tell us about the construction of them and the details? So I actually experimented with a couple handmade samples to perfect the panelling. The tag is a well known signature branding element of By loho, talk to us about that I then used Clo 3-D to digitally tailor and finalise the piece to the perfect measurements. The symbol at the back is a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol from the Bono people of Gyaman that means unity in diversity - that to me is very powerful a statement, even looking at the people around me that I love, all different and unique people coming together for one cause. That is power in my opinion. What’s the story and process behind it? I love the use of metal on garments. The metal patch is like a symbol for the people that know the story behind the project. It unifies all the garments and unifies the people who relate to each pieces story. It also just looks very hard to me. What’s the purpose of these jeanz and where are you looking to take it ? These jeanz are kinda like the finale in a trilogy I’ve been working on for the past two years. They wrap up the story of the three star philosophy that I’m always tryna push. The idea of just getting through hardships and finding yourself at the end. Catch the Drop Tomorrow on Sunday March 31st @ 8pm UK Time

It's no secret that Africa has been producing some of the best jerseys when it comes to the beautiful game. The colours, the culture, the patterns and more are all a recipe for a great kit people are bound to mess with. When Nike tapped in with Nigeria for their 2018 World Cup drip, the world loved it and ever since, the pair have been creating non stop bangers (that's not to say Nigeria has not been producing bangers) Anyway, today were focusing on the emerging African brands showcasing what they’re bringing to the table. • THE MARKETING ON THESE HATS IS CREATIVE AF

I came across this brand the other day and loved the ads plus the overall feel of the brand. So you know I had to approach the brand ask them some questions. What sparked it and how did you think of it? I’ve been wanting to build a brand on my own for years. After finishing school for industrial design and starting to work in the industry, I wanted to build a platform of my own where my creative efforts can live on. To be completely honest, after entering a design role at a big brand, I found myself itching to build the story telling aspect of each product I helped design. It felt weird to work super hard on a product then pass it own for others to build how it gets presented to the world (or sometimes doesn’t get the presented at all, just lands in a site with no marketing) So the desire to have my own brand is really rooted in building a portfolio of creative direction that I don’t get to build from my professional career as a footwear designer. Your creatives looks really chill and friendly but not in a cringy way, how did you form this aesthetic? The aesthetic for me had to feel authentic to myself and feel like it could be timeless. I enjoy thoughtful one liners and slogans then also imagery that is inviting enough in curiosity but also dynamic enough to catch your eye. The aesthetic is still being built of course but the reasoning it ended up how it is more aligns with your next question. They also have a very home made vibe to it where it seems a low budget was utilised very well. Am I right in saying this? and If so, walk us through the process behind executing your creatives. The campaigns do feel homey because they are all shot in my garage and one trip to a cabin in Maine so far. I moved to this apartment in Allston Ma and they had these few garages I could rent for cheap. They were cluttered and moldy but I saw something rad that could be made. So I challenged myself to build the brand home within the aesthetic of the garage which naturally had cinderblock and plywood walls and a big ceiling light. Having consistent environment that we could build out for campaigns was perfect in building the visual identity of the brand. I’d like one day for The consumer to see a photo and go “ oh that’s the window seat garage” And yes we created each campaign with little money, dumpster lumber, some power tools and whole lot of will power. What is the aim of the ads? (what did you want people to feel? how did you want the brand to be perceived etc) The aim of the ads is honestly to build a relatable connection to the consumer. Sometimes it’s done through humour and a tongue in cheek tagline or sometimes it the honest goofiness of dancing with your gf around valentines day. Regardless of the presentation, I hope to create looks and feels that people can relate to or for them to see and just think is plain cool. The brand still looks like it’s in its infancy, what’s the vision and plans for the brand moving forward? The brand is definitely in its infancy, we launched in October 2023 and have plans for two more drops for 2024. The vision is a long term goal of building 2-3 drops each year with variety of product for each one. Hoping more clothing and artwork but also designing hard goods that are fun. Big dream goals is to have a real studio space one day open to the public that acts as a retail and maker space for the brand and creatives that will take time:) baby steps for now haha regardless I am just having fun making cool projects with my friends.
